Glazing & Finishing Details
Looking to elevate your pottery and really dig into the details of refining and perfecting your glazing process?
Also known as “the devil is in the details”, in this workshop I show everything I do post bisque to create elegant and refined surfaces on my pots. Sanding, glazing, colour inlay and more are covered! This is a great companion to my Layered Surfaces Workshop.
Are you feeling overwhelmed by all the steps and decisions you have to make when glazing and finishing your pottery? Looking for some strategies for making it less overwhelming?
In this virtual workshop, you will learn:
- All the finishing steps and details that go into making elegant and refined pots.
- How to wet sand work to create smooth and polished surfaces
- Inlaying coloured underglazes to make the details pop
- Strategies for applying wax resist to minimize annoying drips
- Different ways to apply glaze to help streamline your process and reduce issues
- Additional ways to add underglaze after the bisque stage, and other ways to differentiate your pots.
And as a bonus, I’m also including these lessons free of charge:
- A PDF download of my White Slip and Clear Glaze recipes (for use at cone 6 and under)
- A PDF download of my firing schedules
- An overview of all the tools I use most in my studio
Note: this workshop is different from my Layered Surfaces workshop. This workshop is exclusively about the steps that I take after I have layered slips and underglazes on my work, and before the work is glazed. Also known as “the devil is in the details”. The step-by-step process of how I create my signature Layered Surfaces is available here.

About The Instructor
Hi, I'm Naomi Clement — I love geeking out about pots and helping other makers find their unique voice with clay!
I've been working in clay for 25+ years and have my BFA from NSCAD and MFA from Louisiana State University. I've taught workshops and exhibited my work across Canada and the US, and I'm known for my elegant hand-built forms and rich, layered surfaces.
My teaching style focuses on both the how and the why behind techniques — because understanding the principles empowers you to make the work truly your own. No cookie-cutter projects here, just solid skills you can adapt to your unique vision.
Whether you're just starting out or looking to push your work in new directions, I'm here with practical techniques, real solutions, and zero judgment. The world needs your creativity, and I'm excited to help you discover what's possible with clay 💙
When does the class start?
The workshop starts as soon as you join! It is a self-paced, instant access class, so all you have to do is sign up, and you’ll get all the info on how to access the course delivered right to your inbox within about 15 min.
How long do I have access to this course?
You’ll have access to this course for 90 days from the date of purchase. You can watch is as much as you like during that time, and on any devices you own.
What kinds of tools do I need to take the workshop? You will be able to make everything I demonstrate using the basic pottery tools you already have on hand. So as long as you have some clay, and your standard pottery tools (wire cutter, knife, sponge, and a board to work on), you’ll be good to go. One thing you will need access to is a kiln to fire your finished work. If you want to know more about the tools I use most in my work, check out this video.

" Naomi has such a relaxed and down-to-earth approach to teaching and is VERY generous with all she share. Love her workshops! I have attended two so far and look forward to more. Naomi is an EXCELLENT teacher! I've learned so much from her! "
I loved Naomi’s handle course! She demonstrated numerous ways to enhance handles; from improving ergonomics to adding visual weight and interest. She also provided fantastic tool and studio practice advice too!
"I've always had a love/hate relationship with handles and opted not to put them on my cups for years (decades actually!). I just started watching the workshop, but have already learned so much from you. Dare I say I'm even eager to love handles? Thank you Naomi!”
“ I took your surface decoration workshop awhile back and just wanted to thank you!! I’ve been stuck on a project for too long—your workshop was very inspiring and really helped me focus on simplifying my idea. ”
“ I have taken two workshops with Naomi and I learned so much at both! She is so patient and open with information and tips, which makes her so approachable for students and people learning. After those two workshops I would definitely take another workshop with Naomi! ”
“ Great workshop again today. It was just what I needed. I'm motivated to get in the studio and dive in again – thank you! ”
" I've taken 3 virtual workshops so far from Naomi Clement, and each one gives me such inspiration! I find myself watching more than once, taking copious notes, and so totally engaged that I'm amazed 2 hours can go by so quickly! "
" Naomi is clear, concise, and very willing to answer all questions during the demo. I've asked Naomi questions post-workshop and she is incredibly responsive and kind. I really hope one day to take an in-person workshop from Naomi, but for now I will settle for online and look forward to more..."
