Guest Instructor Bios:

Sarah Pike is a full-time potter living and making pots in Fernie, British Columbia, Canada. She makes functional slab-built pottery in her home studio on an acre of land on the edge of a little ski town. Her pottery is inspired by many things, including the landscape around her home, the rich history of ceramics, but also by antique tinware, textured metal, and old things you might find in barns. She has taught workshops and exhibited her work across the US and Canada. Learn more about her work here

Kala Stein is an artist and designer noted for innovative mold making and casting techniques. At the intersection of craft, design, and new technologies, her work explores notions of beauty through fabrication systems and materials. Kala received her MFA in Ceramics from the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University in 2009. She exhibits her work nationally and works with private clients on custom designs for the home and hospitality industry. After 7 years as the Director of Ceramics at Sonoma Community Center, Kala has recently returned to her studio practice full-time. Learn more about her work here

Naomi Clement is a full-time artist based out of Stratford, Ontario. She received her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design in 2003, and her MFA from Louisiana State University. When she’s not in the studio making pots, Naomi is often found in front of her computer—either teaching virtual workshops or working on all the behind-the-scenes aspects of being a creative entrepreneur. She loves teaching workshops to help other potters find their voice as artists and pursue their creative careers with confidence. Learn more about her here

About The Instructor

Hi, I’m Naomi Clement, I’m a ceramic artist, teacher, and creative entrepreneur. I’ve been working in clay for over 22 years, and I’ve taught workshops and exhibited my work all across Canada and the US.  I have my BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art & Design, and my MFA in Ceramics from Louisiana State University.

Today I am well known for my elegant hand-built forms and the rich and layered surfaces on my pots. I was a thrower for many years, but switched to hand-building a few years ago now and have never looked back! At first I was intimidated by hand-building functional work—I thought it meant I wouldn’t be able to get consistent forms or that it would take forever to get a single pot. But I loved the new world of form and texture that opened up to me when I started hand-building my pots. Sure, it did take a bit longer, but ultimately I was way happier with the end results. Plus, slab-building my pots means I get to add lots of yummy texture to them which contributes to my signature layered surfaces. Hand-building opened up a whole new way of thinking about and decorating my work, and I’ve never looked back.

I created this workshop to share some of the basic strategies that have worked for me, and help you learn how to create your own unique pots!
