One of my favourite things to hear is “pictures don’t do your work justice”. Now I work pretty damn hard to make sure I have good photos of my work, but the reality is that something in 2D can never fully capture something that is in 3D. And I’m okay with that. I like that there are surprises in the work for people to discover over time and through use. In fact, that is a big part of my work, and why I spend so much time building up layers of texture and colour. I don’t want the work to show it all up front, rather, I want my pots to have a sense of a life lived, and of a life still to be lived. A few posts back I mentioned how I wet-sand everything before I glaze it. There’ve been a few questions about this, so I thought I’d share a time-lapse of the process! I sand the pots for a couple of reasons. First, there are often some sharp edges on the white slip areas where I pulled away the paper resist, and I want to smooth those down. And second, there are a lot of bare clay sections on my pots, and I want them to be nice and smooth when finished, so I sand them twice, once at bisque, and then again after the glaze firing. I really enjoy the contrast of the smooth, stone-like texture of the raw clay against the glossy glazed sections that are full of activity and decoration. Pauses are important. .
